We're building an online Lutheran Community within the Oregon Synod and
beyond. We've been asking our Bishop how we can connect with other churches and
share ideas and information.
Here's one brand-new way to do it--on the Soulcafe
website. Click the button to join on the homepage and you'll be asked a few
questions to get you started. Some have asked how this is different from
Facebook. At Synod Assembly we were reminded that Facebook is about "me."
Soulcafe is about "us."

As the Occupy Movement, which protests the economic inequality in our
society, continues to emerge across the nation, people have begun to ask
me how our students feel about the cause. That’s a difficult question
to answer because the response seems to be so varied. More info.
ELCA Disaster Response has been in communication with people in affected
communities around the United States. Discussions and evaluations have
been made around the ability to respond, shortfalls of resources and
emerging needs that are present.
ELCA congregations and members
are already gearing up to respond to those in need. In Delaware, three
ELCA congregations took action by providing meals for evacuated
residents who were staying in shelters. In eastern Pennsylvania, teams
of volunteers are being organized to assist with clean-up. More info.
In times of disaster, members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) have a history of responding quickly and generously. So when an ELCA pastor from Iowa learned about the plight of farmers and ranchers in drought-stricken Texas, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work on a solution that's helping to restore these communities in need. CHICAGO (ELCA) -- An essay written by the presiding bishop of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is featured in a new book, It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living. The
Rev. Mark S. Hanson's essay is a transcript of his "It Gets Better"
video, which was posted on the project's YouTube channel in October
2010. More info.
Amidst the situation of refugees overflowing the camps at Dadaab and
reports that sexual and gender-based violence has been on the rise, it
is good to know that a program like the Lutheran World Federation (LWF)
run “Safe Haven” exists. More info.
CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The ELCA Malaria Campaign, a campaign of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and the Lutheran Malaria
Initiative will provide new opportunities for college and university
students attending Lutheran schools and ELCA campus ministries to engage
in the global fight against malaria. Supported with a generous gift
from Arne and Ruth Sorenson of Washington, D.C., the campaign and
initiative will help equip and inspire young leaders to help make a
difference. More info.
CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), has called on members to give to ELCA World Hunger, pointing out that funds given by individuals now will be matched dollar for dollar. More info.
We help to bring God’s comfort, healing and renewal to those affected by disasters. And when the dust settles and the headlines change, we stay to provide ongoing assistance to those in need. More info. |
